Artist's Comments

Here's a shot of the undergrowth underneath the Hong Kong forest canopy. The broadleafed plants you see are elephant ear plants, or Alocasia; they are very common in Indo-Malayan moist forests. I've also seen plenty of them in Singapore, where I lived for six years (move here when I was 13 or so). They are some of the most beautiful herbaceous plants I've ever seen.

Hong Kong is often classifed by ecologists as part of the Indo-Malayan ecozone, which also includes India and Southeast Asia. Some charismatic native animals that live here are the pangolin, Malayan porcupine, wild boar, feral water buffalo, Burmese python, king cobra, and several species of macaques and dolphins. Leopards and tigers used to prowl here, but they have tragically been extirpated.
