Artist's Comments

Taken while I was at school (that's our soccer field you see in the lower right), this photo shows the sort of vegetation that grows on Hong Kong Island. This type of forest is technically called subtropical moist broadleaf forest, but it looks very jungle-like to me.

Hong Kong is often classifed by ecologists as part of the Indo-Malayan ecozone, which also includes India and Southeast Asia. Some charismatic native animals that live here are the pangolin, Malayan porcupine, wild boar, feral water buffalo, Burmese python, king cobra, and several species of macaques and dolphins. Leopards and tigers used to prowl here, but they have tragically been extirpated.
